Why not rest? Yes, I believe I will.

There it is agaIn- FOMO- the fear of missing out. I have no master except myself as far as work goes and so often I am working myself until I am nearly in tears because my eyes are starting to hurt and I forgot to plan out dinner and there is still too much to do. The fear is that we have interest in our work right now, but perhaps if we do not continue to post, to do newsletters, to update the website, etc., then maybe the interest will pass and we will have lost the opportunity. Part of it, speaking of my evaluation of my motives, is the desire to advance the Kingdom and be helpful to others on the journey to be like Christ, part is the desire to keep the bill collectors satisfied, part is the excitement of seeing growth and a “return” on my efforts…those ever-present analytics that judge my work in every conceivable increment. Ugh. Hurry, hurry, hurry, learn, learn, learn, do, do, do.

And next morning, which at the time of writing is this morning, today, I take my tea to my couch with my Bible app and in the quiet I read his Word-

“For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything…Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.” Hebrews 3:4,6

Ah. He is doing the building. My work is his work. My house is his house. Even I am his house. And He is faithful.

“And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words, ‘On the seventh day God rested from all his works.’”Hebrews 4:3b-4

He has already completed his works. He is resting. He has rest.

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us therefore, make every effort to enter that rest…” Hebrews 4:9-11a

I can rest too, because He has already completed the work, even my work, which is his, since He is the builder of everything. It is only either my own selfish and proud desires or my unbelief in his ability to bring completion that would keep me from resting and that would keep me in bondage to work and to fear.

“‘Today, if you hear his voice,

Do not harden your hearts.’” Hebrews 4:7 (end)

Someone’s voice is calling me, “Why not rest?”

Yes, I believe and I will.
